At Odyssey House NSW, NAIDOC Week is a time of deep reflection, celebration, and connection. This year, we celebrated the rich history, diverse cultures, and enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The 2025 NAIDOC Week theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’, marked the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week – and invited all Australians to reflect on the legacy of past generations, while celebrating those leading the way forward.
A Day of Cultural Connection at Eagle Vale
We began the week with a powerful day of cultural activities at our Eagle Vale Residential Centre. Led by Indigenous residents and staff, the day featured a Smoking Ceremony, basket weaving, earring making, and rock painting – creating space for cultural expression, storytelling, and healing.
We spoke with Aboriginal Liaison AOD Treatment Workers Clifford Cutmore and Donna Shipley, who shared what this year’s theme means to them:
For many of our residents and staff, these moments of cultural connection represent more than celebration; they are an integral part of the healing journey.
Connecting with Community
Later in the week, our team was proud to get out into the community – hosting stalls and engaging with communities at local NAIDOC events. These conversations are where change begins – grounded in respect, openness, and shared purpose.
As NAIDOC Week comes to a close, we’re reminded that celebrating Indigenous culture doesn’t begin and end with one week. It’s a lifelong commitment – to listening and learning from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, every day of the year.
At Odyssey House NSW, we remain committed to ensuring that culturally safe care is embedded in our services.
