Cam celebrates 10 years at Odyssey

cam

As well as being Odyssey’s Community Programs Manager, Cam is a proud dad to his adorable twin girls.

Cam has spent the past 10 years building Odyssey’s Community Programs into what they are today.

He’s a compassionate, caring leader with a clear goal of providing a quality service for all our clients.

How did your journey with Odyssey start?

Working for Odyssey House NSW holds a special place in my heart, not just as an employee, but also as a proud graduate of the Residential Program 16 years ago.

My journey, like many others, shows how Odyssey transforms lives and makes a real impact in the community. After I graduated from the program, I became a personal trainer and massage therapist, then worked away in the mines. I came back to Sydney and decided to study social work.

I started working for another alcohol and other drug service, Bridges, and it just happened that Odyssey acquired Bridges whilst I was working there so I stayed on as an AOD treatment worker.

This move provided more opportunities for me, I became a team leader, a coordinator and now I’m the manager for all Community Programs (and studying for my MBA!)

I am often reminded of how grateful I am for how far I have come. It almost feels like another lifetime ago when I was a resident in the program, and I will always remember where it all started.

How do you think having lived experience helps you in your role today?

I can see through the eyes of someone who’s going through it. I understand what the pain feels like and how difficult it can be to overcome addiction.

I find it’s a big motivator for me as well, I want to give back to the community because of the support I received when I needed it.

What’s your main priority at work?

The priority for me is making sure that my team is supported, that they prioritise their wellbeing, so that they can deliver the best service to the clients.

How do you take care of your own wellbeing?

Family is at the top of my list. I’ve got 4-year-old twin girls and they’re my life.

It’s just the best, I love being a dad. I also meditate daily and train to keep my mental health in check.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone entering the AOD sector, what would it be?

Take care of yourself. Always work on your ability to critically self-reflect. We are all human and there are always areas for us to improve, by doing this we can improve the care we provide and how we show up for others.
